The procedure itself takes under thirty minutes. Ice or topical numbing may be used for your comfort and a filler containing lidocaine will also make the procedure more comfortable. Afterward, you can expect some swelling, which will be mostly resolved in a few days. You will then return for a follow-up visit, at which time any final touches will be undertaken and will be included in the cost of your original procedure. Down time for the fine-tuning treatment is usually significantly less than the original session. Sclerotherapy is a well-proven medical procedure that has been in use since the 1930s to treat visible veins on the legs. It involves injecting a solution, generally a high percent sodium chloride, directly into the problematic veins, which cause them to swell, collapse and fade.
Sclerotherapy is the most common spider vein treatment. Spider veins are much smaller and closer to the skin’s surface than varicose veins, which are enlarged veins that look swollen or bulge above the surface of the skin. Red, purple or blue in colour, spider veins’ short jagged lines can look like spider webs (hence the name) or branches of a tree.
This safe and easy procedure is considered the ‘gold standard’ vein treatment, preferred over laser vein treatment for eliminating leg veins. Blood vessels on the legs tend to be resistant to laser treatment, unless they are very small veins that the sclerotherapy is unable to destroy.
Unlike a laser, the sclerosing solution additionally closes the feeder veins under the skin that are causing the spider veins to form, thereby making a recurrence of the spider veins in the treated area less likely.
